Welcome to Year 4! We are excited to return to school on Thursday, 4th September. We have a fun-filled Autumn term with lots of new, exciting topics across the curriculum.
This page will be regularly updated to keep parents, carers, and children informed of what we are learning about at school.
Drop-off and collection times:
Drop-off: 8:40 am (Register taken at 8:50 am)
Collection: 3:20 pm
Daily Equipment:
- Please ensure your child brings their homework diary and a reading book in each day.
- They are also welcome to bring in a small pencil case with a pencil, ruler, rubber, sharpener, black handwriting pen, purple pen and colouring pencils.

Maths We follow the White Rose scheme of learning.
More information is available here: White Rose Website
- Place Value
Pupils will be taught to:
- count in multiples of 6, 7, 9, 25 and 1,000
- find 1,000 more or less than a given number
- count backwards through 0 to include negative numbers
- recognise the place value of each digit in a four-digit number (1,000s, 100s, 10s, and 1s)
- order and compare numbers beyond 1,000
- identify, represent and estimate numbers using different representations
- round any number to the nearest 10, 100 or 1,000
- solve number and practical problems that involve all of the above and with increasingly large positive numbers
- read Roman numerals to 100 (I to C) and know that over time, the numeral system changed to include the concept of 0 and place value
- Addition and Subtraction
Pupils will be taught to:
- add and subtract numbers with up to 4 digits using the formal written methods of columnar addition and subtraction, where appropriate
- estimate and use inverse operations to check answers to a calculation
- solve addition and subtraction two-step problems in contexts, deciding which operations and methods to use and why
Maths homework :
Homework sessions will be set on TTRockstars.
This will be 15 minutes on Garage each week plus 2 soundcheck games. Garage helps them to learn the tables they are not yet confident with, and Soundcheck prepares them for the Multiplication Tables Check. Once the set homework is complete, children can play any of the games for additional practice, including 'Jamming' to practise specific tables without the timer; 'Studio' to increase speed and Rock Status; and 'Soundcheck' to prepare for the summer term times tables test.
A maths homework sheet will also be sent home each Friday to be returned the following Friday. This will be additional arithmetic practice to aid children's fluency and familiarity with written methods that have been learned at school.
English
As a school, we use Talk4Writing as a framework- all units are based on this.
Autumn 1
We begin the term with writing fiction. We will look at how writers create setting and atmosphere. The story we will use to inspire us is The Tunnel by Anthony Browne.
English homework:
Reading: children should read daily and record in their homework diary.
Spelling: at least 5 games on Spelling Shed each week (Spellings will be updated each Monday.)

Children may borrow two books for a period of two weeks.
At the end of the loan period, books must be returned to school where the loan can be renewed if required. If a book is lost, please talk to
Mrs Bickmore or Mrs Burnham. We ask for a contribution of £5.00 towards replacing lost books. Children can log in to their Reading Cloud
accounts from home to check their current loans or look for suggestions about what to read next.
